Players earn followers which adds to their status level for doing various styles of driving and flying which is banked once the player's score gain ends without being interrupted. Various activities such as events and skills can be activated whilst in FreeDrive. Players can explore the country freely in FreeDrive. Progression is measured through a system called Status which oversees the player's level of fame through followers gained. Players can switch between the vehicle types quickly and easily using the Fast Fav feature. Each vehicle type has its own physics and controls, making them unique in their gameplay. The Crew 2 features multiple vehicles including cars, but expands into other types including planes, motorcycles, and boats. The game takes place on the same map of United States from the first game with many geographical differences.

The Crew 2 features more of a motorsport-focused racing environment and almost entirely moves away from the illegal street racing scene present in the first game.
